Art Books – Magic the Gathering

New blog post, new site layout!

Apologies for the delay in getting new content out there, but it’s been a busy year.  For 2019 I plan to post more regularly than 2018….. we’ll see how that goes.

Art Appreciation

Although I no longer play Magic the Gathering, I’ve always been a huge fan of the art work.  It’s one aspect that attracted me to the game in the first place.

While loving the art work; the detail, the atmosphere and the themes from Magic, the downside is the art is very small on the cards.  Now, it’s amazing what detail and quality can be squeezed into such a small place, but to really appreciate it, you need to go large.

And Wizards of the Coast have certainly gone large!

My wife got me 2 art books for Christmas – OK, I provided some guidance – and wow, they are stunning.

Each book measures around 10 inches by 12 inches, bound hardback, glossy dust cover and over 220 pages.  And those pages are heavy, thick glossy paper with fantastic artwork throughout.  The pictures below don’t do the books justice.  They are gorgeous.

Innistrad and Ixalan book covers

These are 2 from the series of 6 books released so far – Ixalan and Innistrad.  The others available are, Dominaria, Zendikar, Amonkhet, Kaladesh, with Ravinca due to be released at the end of January 2019.  Each book covering a different plane from Magic.  Along with the artwork is detail of the lands, peoples and history of each plane.

So, enough of my gushing… to the pictures!

Dark Gothic horror, and unnameable monsters lurk around every corner.  Vampires, werewolves, zombies and spirits… humans are in the minority on Innistrad
